Wood Group to provide automation services for ExxonMobil Gulf Coast projects

| By Mary Bailey

Wood Group Mustang’s (Houston; www.mustangeng.com) Automation and Control business unit is providing process control systems detailed engineering, procurement and fabrication services for the multi-billion dollar expansion project by ExxonMobil Chemical Co. (Houston; www.exxonmobilchemical.com) at the Baytown and Mont Belvieu plants near Houston.

This project is the largest-ever chemical investment in the U.S. by ExxonMobil and is being designed to be the most competitive new petrochemical project in the world. WG Mustang Automation and Control’s multi-million dollar project scope includes procurement, integration and packaging of the distributed control systems, safety instrumented systems, analyzers, information and telecommunications systems, and other associated equipment.

“The project is made possible in large part by abundant, affordable supplies of US natural gas for energy and chemical feedstock,” says Steve Pryor, president of ExxonMobil Chemical Co. “Shale development has provided US chemical producers a double benefit as an energy source and as a key raw material to make plastics and other essential products.”

When completed, the project will enable ExxonMobil Chemical to economically supply a rapidly growing demand for high-value polyethylene products, which deliver sustainability benefits such as lighter packaging weight, lower energy consumption and reduced emissions.

“Automation and Control’s early engagement on the project is resulting in a fit-for-purpose design that will ensure the automation systems provide ExxonMobil Chemical with the best-possible operability andcost-effective solutions,” explains Richard Seale, WG Mustang Automation and Control president.

“A strong benefit to this project is the integration of the project team, Wood Group Mustang and ExxonMobil employees sitting side-by-side and working together daily. The closely aligned team will help to enable this large-scale project to succeed.”

Wood Group Mustang Automation and Control has worked with ExxonMobil Chemical for more than 10 years, delivering successful projects in Singapore and the United States.
