These new resins are an alternative to metal boiler components

| By Chemical Engineering

In wall-hung condensing boilers for residential use, high-performance Noryl, Ultem and Cycoloy resins can replace traditional metals such as copper and brass used in boiler components, including condenser housings and manifolds. In high-efficiency condensing boilers, Noryl PPX resin offers an advantage over stainless-steel condenser housings for its chemical resistance and ability to withstand the required heat from the condenser. Boiler manifolds are traditionally made of copper tubing and brass parts, but upgrading to Noryl glass-filled resin or Ultem resin may allow manufacturers to consolidate parts, reduce weight, and save on fabrication and assembly costs. A third application is the boiler control panel cover and enclosure components, typically made of painted sheet metal. Flame-retardant Cycoloy resins offer excellent aesthetics and surface finishes combined with high-flow properties to mold thin-wall parts. — Sabic Innovative Plastics, Pittsfield, Mass.
