Samsung awarded contract for Kuwait’s Clean Fuels Project refinery

Samsung Engineering Co., Ltd. (Seoul, South Korea; www.samsungengineering.com) has announced that it has received a contract for the $3.8 billion Mina Abdullah I refinery of  the Clean Fuels Project (CFP) from Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC).
 
The Mina Abdullah I refinery package will be executed by a joint venture of Samsung Engineering (43%), UK’s Petrofac (47%) and CB&I Netherland B.V. (10%). Samsung Engineering will be responsible for engineering, procurement, construction and pre-commissioning on a lump-sum turnkey basis. The facility will be located in the Mina Abdullah province, about 30 miles southeast of Kuwait City.
 
Worth a total of $12 billion, the CFP project includes the Mina Abdullah I&II and Mina al-Ahmadi refineries. US and Japanese-led consortiums were approved to build Mina Abdullah II and Mina al-Ahmadi packages, respectively. The entire refinery development project will increase its capacity to 800,000 barrels per stream day (BPSD) from the current 736,000 BPSD.
