This filter system is designed for viscous fluids

The Gear and Lube Oil Filtration System (photo) features a substantial 4-gal/min flow capacity and handles a maximum viscosity of 10,000 SUS at 100°F, making it one of the most versatile portable systems in the industry, boasts the firm. Because of the higher pressures involved with higher viscosities, conventional hydraulic filtration systems would operate in a bypass mode, thus filtering very little of the fluid, whereas this system uses a multistage-filtration process, which enables it to deliver higher flowrates. The system also features differential pressure gauges that indicate when each of the filter elements needs to be changed. Two sampling ports are included for safely sampling and monitoring the condition of the oil. Two models are available, a hand-held unit and a portable cart system. — Trico Corp., Pewaukee, Wisc.

Eliminate de-energized relays resulting from ground faults

The Z789 Zener diode barrier provides 300 Ohm, 28 V, diode-return, positive-polarity operation, making it an ideal intrinsic safety choice for hazardous-area applications. In the traditional method of switch-status detection, the metal contacts on the switch are intended for use with low voltages and currents. The problem with this configuration is that a ground fault in any wire leaves the relay in a de-energized state, despite the switch being closed. The Z789 offers a solution through the use of quasi-ground-floating wiring. Quasi-floating outputs use a circuit with a mixture of positive and negative feedback of current and voltage to keep the signal levels steady. Series barriers are available in one-, two- and three-channel versions and in more than 75 models, for a.c. and d.c. A replaceable-fuse version facilitates circuit-loop checks and reduces installation cost and space requirements, while its multi-level terminal blocks allow easy wiring. — Pepperl+Fuchs, Inc., Twinsburg, Ohio

This constant-pressure unit is ideal for aseptic processing

The newly standardized M7250CP (constant pressure) fluid processor has been introduced for applications in the biopharmaceutical industry. Standard features include SIP (steam-in-place) for aseptic processing of drugs in a cGMP environment, a data-acquisition (DAQ) station and ultra CIP (clean-in-place) that eliminates the need to disassemble for cleaning between batches or before storage. The DAQ station enables continuous temperature, pressure and flow monitoring while users can record and print digital testing data. An optional PLC manages onboard sensor signals and coordinates alarms, alarm acknowledgement and silencing and motor-starter interlocks. If an operating parameter happens to fall out of tolerance, the PLC will manage the signal processing. The fluid processor achieves a uniform (within ±5%) pressure profile and, coupled with its proprietary, fixed-interaction chambers, the constant-pressure system ensures that every unit volume of product is exposed to the same level of shear force. This feature results in the least number of passes, thereby maximizing production-cost savings, says the firm. — Microfluidics, Newton, Mass.

This constant-pressure unit is ideal for aseptic processing

The newly standardized M7250CP (constant pressure) fluid processor has been introduced for applications in the biopharmaceutical industry. Standard features include steaam in place (SIP) for aseptic processing of drugs in a cGMP environment, a data-acquisition (DAQ) station and ultra clean in place (CIP) that eliminates the need to disassemble for cleaning between batches or before storage.

Temperature monitoring for metals processing

Designed to meet temperature-measurement challenges in the metals-processing industry, the Marathon MM 3M infrared (IR) sensor (photo, p. 32I-7) measures low-to-medium temperatures (100–600°C) with more accuracy, regardless of changing emissivity. The sensor utilizes shorter IR wavelengths (2.3µm) in order to minimize errors due to the uncertainty of emissivity — the measure of an object’s ability to emit IR energy. The new thermometer is not as sensitive to changes in emissivity on the target material as long wavelength sensors are, and therefore provides more accurate readings across the varying targets, at varying temperature, says the firm. The unit features an IP 65 sealed user interface and precision variable optics. — Raytek GmbH, Berlin, Germany
