Praj Industries (Pune, India; www.praj.net) has signed a contract with Kakira Sugars, a leading sugar and power producer in Uganda, for a large ethanol plant. The plant, to be located in Uganda, will produce fuel ethanol, as well as premium-grade beverage ethanol, and will have a capacity of 60,000 liters per day ethanol. The facility will be Uganda’s largest ethanol production plant.
The plant will process cane molasses from the Kakira Sugar Mill. Praj will provide key technologies for fermentation, distillation and wastewater-treatment, as well as biomethanation, followed by biocomposting. The project will be supplied on an EPC basis, including the provision of technology and services for the following components: boilers, turbines, water-treatment plant, laboratory and auxiliary packages. All of the steam required, and 50-60% of the electricity consumed by the complex will be generated by the distillery plant itself. Effluent generated by the plant will be converted into biocompost.
