Mitsui E&S completes large-scale hydrogen-supply facility

| By Mary Bailey

Mitsui E&S Co., Ltd. (Tokyo) has completed the construction of a hydrogen gas supply facility (liquid hydrogen tank, hydrogen gas compressor, etc.) at at Mitsui E&SE&S Tamano Factory, aiming for the early launch of our hydrogen-related business. Mitsui E&S have conducted a demonstration operation.

At Mitsui E&S Tamano Factory, which is the production base for core products, such as large marine diesel engines and industrial machinery/reciprocating compressors, Mitsui E&S E&S have constructed a facility capable of supplying a large volume of hydrogen gas at 1,000Nm3/h.

Mitsui E&S E&S plan to supply hydrogen from this facility to its large marine engine (output 7MW) under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism subsidy project, which was adopted together with Daihatsu Diesel Co., Ltd. in fiscal 2021. In this project, Mitsui E&S will develop hydrogen combustion technology along with a booster compressor that boosts hydrogen up to 35 MPa and a GVT (Gas Valve Train) that controls hydrogen supply. Mitsui E&S will establish the coupling operation technology for fuel supply and large marine engines, and accelerate the development of hydrogen combustion propulsion plants.

The reciprocating compressor, which is the core equipment of this facility, is adopted from Kaji Technology Co., Ltd., a group company of Mitsui E&S, along with the above-mentioned booster compressor. For this project, Mitsui E&S applied high-pressure seal technology under non-lubricated conditions to this reciprocating compressor and conducted a demonstration operation. By deploying this seal technology, the company will satisfy the high-pressure specifications required for compressors for the hydrogen supply chain and contribute to the development of hydrogen supply infrastructure.
