Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd. (MHPS; Yokohama, Japan; www.mhps.com) has received an order from Green Core Geothermal, Inc. (GCGI), a group company of Energy Development Corporation (EDC) of the Philippines, the world leader in geothermal power generation capacity, for rehabilitation work on Units No.1 through No.3 at the Tongonan Geothermal Power Plant. The upgrade work on the three units, each having an output of 37.5 MW, is scheduled for completion in February 2017.
The Tongonan Geothermal Power Plant is located in proximity to Ormoc, a port city on Leyte, an island in the Visayas group in central Philippines. MHPS delivered the core equipment for the plant in 1981, enabling the Tongonan facility to support its region’s power demand reliably for 34 years.
Under the rehabilitation work on order, MHPS will replace the steam path components of the three dated steam turbines at the plant with its newest model.
The Philippines is one of the world’s foremost generators of geothermal power. EDC ranks as the global leader with respect to capacity of its geothermal power plants, with ability to supply 1,159 MW of this renewable energy.
