Intergraph releases latest versions of SmartPlant 3D

| By Gerald Ondrey

Intergraph (Huntsville, Ala.; www.intergraph.com) has released the latest versions of its next-generation plant, offshore and materials handling design solutions, SmartPlant 3D, SmartMarine 3D and SmartPlant 3D Materials Handling Edition. Collectively known as Smart 3D, they are said to be the process, power and marine industries’ most advanced and most productive design solutions with a focus on rules, relationships and automation.

All three Smart 3D 2011 Service Pack 1 (SP1) solutions are now available for upgrade or purchase. They are the most feature-rich, highest-quality releases of SmartPlant 3D, SmartMarine 3D and SmartPlant 3D Materials Handling Edition to date with nearly 1,200 enhancements and continuous testing over the past 20 months. Several significant Smart 3D customers have been involved in testing and piloting the Smart 3D 2011 SP1 solutions for production.

The latest Smart 3D releases offer enhancements to Intergraph’s innovative Reference 3D capability, which enables users to reference data from Intergraph Plant Design System (PDS), Aveva PDMS and other formats — allowing companies to share piping, structural and equipment portions of Smart 3D models with multiple subcontractors without exposing other ultra-sensitive parts of the model. The capability offers opportunities for tremendous productivity gains on mega-projects while also protecting intellectual property.

The latest versions of Smart 3D also offer improved design reuse and new modeling capabilities, such as functionality for circular and arced pipe modeling vital to the oil and gas, power and process industries. Enhancements have also been made to the electrical and duct modeling environments. Users can benefit from easier creation of project deliverables, improved management of change tools, enhanced 3D data viewing and manipulation and expanded sample catalog data. In SmartMarine 3D, new offshore and shipbuilding structural functions have been added for detailed design and fabrication of knuckled structures and rolled members. A full library of connections has been added to allow a rule-based selection of the appropriate end cut features. SmartMarine 3D also has a new service to find and manage “common parts,” significantly enhanced the functionality to define and control marking on manufactured parts, as well as numerous other productivity and usability enhancements.

SmartPlant 3D is the world’s first and only next-generation 3D plant design solution. It is the most advanced and productive 3D plant design solution that effectively enables optimized design, increasing safety, quality and productivity, while shortening project schedules. Companies using SmartPlant 3D typically report a 30% improvement in overall engineering design. For more on SmartPlant 3D, visit www.intergraph.com/go/smartplant3d.

SmartPlant 3D Materials Handling Edition provides the gateway for the metals and mining industry to implement projects using Intergraph’s established, intelligent Smart 3D solutions. The metals and mining industry can now take advantage of the benefits of a single database, multi-parallel discipline design, clash detection and data reuse.
