Grupa Azoty to begin production of new multi-component fertilizer

| By Mary Bailey

Grupa Azoty SA (Tarnów, Poland) is set to begin producing its new multi-component fertilizer – POLIFOSKA Multi S – a product containing 23% sulfur at its Police facilities. This launch marks the latest addition to the company’s fertilizer portfolio, joining the likes of megAN (a high-granule ammonium nitrate fertilizer), RSM OPTIMA (a nitrate-urea solution with a distinctive light blue color for easy product origin identification), and eNpluS (an ammonium fertilizer enriched with sulfur and calcium), whose production commenced in recent months within Grupa Azoty.

“Expanding our product range this time with a multi-component fertilizer, we have formulated POLIFOSKA Multi S to be highly efficient. Its balanced nutrient composition not only promotes proper plant growth and development but also enhances crop yield quality—with notable economic benefits.  I am convinced that we are introducing a fertilizer that will soon become one of the flagship products in Grupa Azoty Police’s range,” commented Hubert Kamola, Vice President of the Management Board of Grupa Azoty S.A.

POLIFOSKA Multi S is designed with readily soluble and plant-available nutrients: 7% nitrogen in ammoniacal form, 10% phosphorus, 20% potassium, 5% calcium, 1% magnesium, 23% sulfur in sulfate form. Additionally, POLIFOSKA Multi S is enriched with silicon. Thanks to its excellent water solubility, the nutrients are rapidly delivered to the roots, supporting plant development from the very start of the growing season.

The ammonia’s nitrogen is directly absorbed by plants and is protected against leaching, ensuring uniform crop growth and a well-developed root system. This form of nitrogen also stimulates phosphorus uptake while helping to curb excessive potassium absorption. Sulfur further aids in the effective assimilation of nitrogen, whereas phosphorus in its most readily absorbed form—ammonium phosphate—enables uptake even under limited soil moisture conditions. It is worth noting that over 41% of Polish soils have high or very high phosphorus levels; therefore, the fertilizer’s low phosphorus content combined with a high potassium ratio (1:2) helps prevent further phosphorus accumulation, especially in phosphorus-rich soils.

Potassium plays a crucial role in regulating water and nitrogen metabolism. It boosts the natural resistance of plants to diseases, pests, and frost while reducing lodging. Adequate potassium supply improves plant resilience against stress factors such as drought. Calcium, an essential building block for plants, enhances the uptake of less-mobile nutrients like potassium and phosphorus, which are vital for root development.
Magnesium easily migrates to deeper soil layers, supporting overall nutrient balance. The sulfate form of sulfur is highly water-soluble and quickly absorbed, fortifying plants during the early stages of growth. Sufficient sulfur availability supports proper nitrogen metabolism and protein biosynthesis in seeds. In legume crops, it also improves the nitrogen-fixing ability of root nodules and optimizes the use of mineral nitrogen.
Silicon positively influences plant growth, development, and stress resistance. It enhances phosphorus uptake in both very acidic and alkaline soils and bolsters plant tolerance to extreme temperatures.

POLIFOSKA Multi S is distinguished by its uniform, durable granules which ensure even and precise application across a wide range of seeding rates. This comprehensive fertilizer is particularly recommended for pre-sowing application but is also well suited for early spring broadcasting on winter crops. Maximum efficiency is achieved when applied 7–14 days before sowing and incorporated into the soil at a depth of 10–20 cm. It is suitable for all arable crops, including spring and winter cereals, winter rapeseed, maize, legumes, root crops, and green manure, especially in fields with high or very high phosphorus content.
