Genomatica (San Diego, Calif.; www.genomatica.com) announced today that it has produced biologically derived 1,4-butane diol (bio-BDO) at demonstration scale at the Decatur, Ill. facility of its partner, Tate & Lyle (London, U.K.; www.tateandlyle.com). The demonstration-scale stage of production will validate the design and basic engineering package for construction of the company’s first commercial-scale plant, Genomatica says.
The demo-scale fermentation, completed on schedule in a 13,000-L tank, moves Genomatica further toward commercial production, which the company says will begin in late 2012.
