Chementator: Jet fuel

By Chemical Engineering |

Researchers at Penn State University’s (University Park, Pa.; edlinks.chemengonline.com/5829-551) Energy Institute are developing a jet fuel that is composed of at least 50% bituminous coal. The fuel, provisionally designated JP900, is comparable to Jet A or military JP 8, and was recently demonstrated as being capable of powering a helicopter. The fuel is made by mixing light cycle oil (a petroleum byproduct) and coal-derived, refined chemical oil (a byproduct of the coke industry) with hydrogen. The fuel is then recovered by distillation. PSU has produced 500 gal. of the fuel at a pilot plant, operated by Intertek (Warren, Pa.), and plans produce about 100 bbl for future testing by the U. S. Air Force and others.   Click here for a full pdf version of the Chementator Section
