An O2-sensor for welding

| By Chemical Engineering

The PurgEye 500 Weld Purge Monitor uses a nonchemical sensor that measures oxygen levels down to 10 ppm, but yet is only a fraction of the cost of alternative instruments designed to do the same work. A special pump inside the PurgEye housing extracts samples of exhaust gas for checking the quality of the Weld Purge Gas around the weld root. The instrument has an alarm that activates when the O2 levels around the weld exceed the desired value, and an associated alarm shuts the welding machine off or on again as the O2 levels fluctuate, to ensure a perfect purge all the time. — Huntingdon Fusion Techniques Ltd., Carms, U.K.
