AIChE announces leadership transition, initiates nationwide search for new CEO

| By Mary Bailey

The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE; New York, N.Y.) announced that Darlene S. Schuster, PhD, will retire as CEO and Executive Director, effective October 31, 2024. AIChE’s Board of Directors will begin a nationwide search for a new CEO to execute the organization’s long-range growth strategy, including the ongoing transformation of the Institute to serve the diverse interests of chemical engineering professionals.

Prior to serving as CEO and Executive Director, Dr. Schuster held a number of positions, including Chief of Technical Operations, Membership, and Business Development at AIChE.

“Darlene has been instrumental in supporting AIChE’s growth and innovation for more than 20 years, serving as a volunteer, consultant, employee, and CEO,” said Alan E. Nelson, AIChE’s 2024 President. “The Board is grateful for her dedication and the many contributions she has made to the organization and its members.”

As AIChE conducts a nationwide search for a new CEO, the Board of Directors has approved the appointment of Victor Bohnert from Innovatis Group to serve as interim CEO. Innovatis Group is an association management company which provides in-house management support for organizations. AIChE’s Board of Directors will partner closely with Victor to ensure continuity to AIChE’s leadership, staff, volunteers, and membership until a new CEO has been appointed.
