Activated carbon

ADA-ES, Inc. (Littleton, Colo.; edlinks.chemengonline.com/6516-550) has been awarded a contract from the U.S. DOE to develop an improved process for manufacturing activated carbon (AC). AC is the key chemical used in ADA-ES’s mercury-control technology (CE, December 2004, p. 18) — a low-capital cost technology in which the largest cost component is the sorbants. Currently, AC is manufactured primarily for water-treatment applications, with a U.S. market of approximately $200 million/yr. The expected market for mercury control in the power industry could increase the AC demand to $1–2 billion/yr, says the company. The initial $100,000 of Phase I DOE funding will be used for laboratory and slipstream testing to refine ADA-ES’s manufacturing process. DOE Phase II follow-up funding of $750,000, if awarded, would begin in mid 2007 to support the scaleup of the manufacturing process and produce sufficient quantities of the sorbant to use in a full-scale mercury-control test at one or more coal-fired power plants.
