A new thermoplastic

By Chemical Engineering |

GE Plastics (Pittsfield, Mass.; edlinks.chemengonline.com/6891-543) has launched Extem thermoplastic polyimide (TPI) resins, a new family of amorphous polymers. The new resin is said to overcome the drawbacks of semicrystalline materials, imidized thermosets and competitive amorphous thermoplastics. Among Extem resin’s properties are: it can be used continuously at temperatures up to 230°C; has a glass temperature of 310°C; high stiffness and creep resistance under load; excellent resistance to chemicals, including chlorinated solvents; and inherent flame retardance without the use of halogens.
